The Royal London Borough of Greenwich

 

The Royal borough of Greenwich is one of the 33 boroughs that make up Greater London, it is located in South East London and is pretty central. Greenwich is a borough famous for Greenwich Park which is one of London's top parks that dates back to Roman Times and covers 183 acres.

Greenwich is a great area. For those who love history there is the National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark, Old Naval College and the historic waterfront. Greenwich is definitely an area where old meets new and here you can find the Greenwich Market showcasing arts and crafts, vintage clothes and collectibles which is incredibly popular with both Londoners and tourists. For those who love contemporary culture there is The Peter Harrison Planetarium, Greenwich Theatre, Greenwich Dance and much much more.

The 15 different different of the Royal Borough of Greenwich are:

  • Abbey Wood  - A Zone 4 area it is fairly green area with a number of parks, local nature reserve as well as shops pubs, clubs and restaurants.
  • Blackheath -  A affluent area in London Fare Zone 3, it is very close to Greenwich Park and has a great variety of shops, restaurants pubs as well as it's own annual festival - On Blackheath Festival
  • Charlton - Home to Charlton Athletic, it is in London Fare Zone 3 and is home to many parks and a site of Special Scientific Interest.
  • Eltham - Eltham is an up and coming area due to its proximity with Lewisham and is in London Fare Zone Four. It has a rich historical heritage and is home the Eltham Palace the childhood home of Henry V111. It has an abundance of parks and open green spaces which are featured in the London Green Chain walking network. Eltham has some great pubs as well as a theatre and soon to be built cinema
  • Horn Park - This area used to be a fruit farm until it was used to build new homes after WW2
  • Greenwich- This highly popular and affluent area is in both London Fare Zone 1 and 2. This is the heart of the Greenwich Borough and is home to Greenwich park as well as some fantastic independent boutique shops, markets and theatres.
  • Kidbrooke - A Zone 3 area that is in active development. It offers shops, bars and schools
  • Lee -  Lee is both in the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham and is a mainly resedential area
  • Mottingham - A London Fare Zone 4 are, Mottingham lies on the Bormley Greenwich borders and is a green area rich with parks and is also part of the London Green Chain Network
  • New Eltham - As the name suggests, this area is very close to Eltham and has a rich offering of sports and recreation. New Eltham can boast of having it's own Operatic Society, a jogging club and as well as it's own football teams
  • Plumstead - A London Fare Zone 4 area, Plumstead has a rich cultural diversity and is home to many parks  and green spaces such as Plumstead Common.
  • Shooters Hill - Reputedly got its name by being an area popular with highwaymen. It is also one of the highest points of London 
  • Thamesmead - Located in both the boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley and is situated along the river Thames and is currently enjoying re-development
  • Woolwich - An up and coming area that boats of its own farmers markets, gastropubs and is now part of the Dockland's Light Railway

  • Greenwich is home to the location of the world famous Prime Meridian, from which time itself it calculated by the use of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
  • Greenwich helped host the summer 2012 Olympics
  • The borough became royal in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth 11

What are the neighbours like in the Royal Borough of Greenwich?

There are some very affluent areas in Greenwich in particular areas of Blackheath which is in close proximity to the wonder Greenwich Park. Greenwich is quite a green borough and there are some great shopping districts such as the historic Greenwich Market.

 

Transport in Greenwich

Greenwich is an area of London that has great transport links for getting around London and is in easy distance to Lewisham station which is a National Rail and Docklands Light Railway station which offers quick access to major central stations such as London Waterloo, London Cannon Street, London Charing Cross and London Bridge.
