The London borough of Hackney

 

Hackney is one of the 33 boroughs that make up Greater London, it is located  north of the Thames, and is the 5th smallest borough in London. Hackney has an area of 7.4 square miles.

It is located in east London and in recent times has become very popular with young people. It boasts or great independent and unusual shops from vintage clothing to fantastic markets. There's also some great restaurants and bars too

The different areas of Hackney are:

  • Bethnal Green (also part of Tower Hamlets) A London Fare Zone 2 area and is pretty central. Bethnal Green is home to Spitalfields Market which offers some great stalls ranging from antiques, jewellry, current fashions and vintage clothing
  • Dalston Like Bethnal Green, Dalston is a very trendy area and very popular with young people. It offers great night life as well as many restaurants and a cinema
  • De Beauvoir Town Borders with Islington, Dalston and Shoreditch and also boasts of its own nature areas
  • Hackney Central Hackney is a great area for musical and is home to the Hackney  Empire which is one of the oldest surviving music halls. It's great for a night out
  • Hackney Downs Hackney is a great area for musical and is home to the Hackney  Empire which is one of the oldest surviving music halls. It's great for a night out
  • Hackney Marches Is one of the largest areas of common land in Greater London and is 136 hectares. It now forms part of the Olympic Park
  • Hackney Wick An area very close to the borough of Newham and Waltham Forest due to the development of the Olympic Park it is now an up and coming area
  • Haggerston Also considered a part of Shoreditch it is a very popular place for those in the creative industries
  • Homerton Very close to Hackney central it is an up and coming area
  • Hoxton Very close to the financial district of the City of London it is incredibly central and has a great night life with lots of pubs, clubs and restaurants
  • Kingsland Also known as Dalston, it is a very trendy area popular with young people
  • Lea Bridge Very close to Clapton and Leyton, Lea Bridge has large amounts of open space and recreational facilities
  • London Fields Also contains a park called London Fields and is very popular with young people due to its close proximity to Dalston
  • Lower Clapton Very close to Hackney Central it is a multicultural area and this is reflected along Chatsworth road which sells African Asian, Carribbean and Turkish food
  • Manor House Borders with the London borough of Haringey and was once very popular with squatters!
  • Shacklewell - Shackle is an area that is hard to define, residents living their either identify themselves as being part of Stoke Newington or Dalton.
  • Shoreditch Considered to be central London Shoreditch is an extremely popular and fashionable area of London due to it being poulated with arty and creative industries. It is considered the "hipster" capital. 
  • South Hackney - Located on the border of the Hackney borough it is very close to Victoria park
  • Stamford Hill - Known as an area of high fertility and has one of the highest birthrates in the UK, twice the UK average. Must be something in the water!
  • Stoke Newington - Despite its small size Stoke Newington has a large amount of green space. This is an area that has recently undergone development and is now home to many independent shops, cafes and pubs.
  • Upper Clapton - Upper Clapton is home to Springfield Park which contains a waterfront as well as many sports and recreational facilities.

 

Quirky facts about Hackney

  • The borough of Hackney was only formed in 1965 and incorporated the old metropolitan boroughs of Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington.
  • There are 1,300 listed buildings in Hackney and contains 25 conservation areas.
  • Edgar Allan Poe once lived in Hackney and went to school there.
  • In 2009 the Italian Vogue magazine hailed Dalston as the coolest place on earth.
  • Hackney marshes has the largest number of amateur football pitches in Europe.
  • Hackney is definitely one of the trendy areas of London and if you're thinking of moving here you might end up living next door to some of these people: Idris Elba, Paloma Faith, Noel Fielding, Ray Winstone and Labrinth are all rumoured to live in Hackney.

Transport in Hackney

Hackney has good transport links and is connected to the London Underground which is handy for travelling into central London. Some parts of Hackney are so close to central London that you can easily walk there.
