The London borough of Wandsworth

Wandsworth is one of the 33 boroughs that make up Greater London, it is located in south west London and is considered to be inner-city London. It is next to the London boroughs of Merton, Lambeth, Kingston Upon Thames and Richmond Upon Thames. Wandsworth is an area that is very popular with young professionals working in the capital probably due to Wandsworth having one of the lowest council tax rates in the country! The five main areas are; Balham, Clapham,Putney, Tooting and Wansdworth town. It is a fairly affluent borough of London.

 

The 11 different districts of Wandsworth are:

  • Balham - A very popular areas for young professionals as it has it's own tube station on the Northern Line. It offers good nightlife and is home to the famous comedy club The Bedford. 
  • Battersea - Very much an area of inner city London Battersea has gone through extraordinary regeneration and is now considered an affluent area of London and is very close to Chelsea. It has excellent transport links.
  • Earlsfield -  A mainly residential area with affordable housing due to the area being overlooked in comparison with other areas of Wandsworth.
  • Furzedown - An area which borders with Streatham and Tooting, it is mainly residential and is considered an inner city area.
  • Nine Elms - This is currently an industrial area located in Battersea which is going through huge transformations, an area to keep an eye on.
  • Putney - A lively area that is popular with young professionals located by the river Thames. It is quite a green area of London despite being in zone two but also offers great nightlife.
  • Putney Vale - A small area located very close to Roehampton, once an area dominated with social housing, most residential properties are now mostly privately owned.
  • Roehampton- A mainly residential area of Wandsworth that lies in very close proximity to Richmond park. Home to some of the largest council estates in the UK it is now an area of regeneration. 
  • Southfields - Another largely residential area of Wandsworth in very close proximity to the affluent area of Wimbledon.
  • Streatham Park - A residential area located near Furzedown it is a green area and parts are designated as conservation areas.
  • Tooting- An area described as up and coming due to it's affordable rents and house prices. It is situated close to Balham, Streatham and Wimbledon.
  • Wandsworth Wandsworth is largely a residential area that offers great green spaces such as Wandsworth Common. It also boasts of areas of luxury residential properties which boasts of Gordon Ramsay as a local resident.
  • Wimbledon Common - A large open space which is home to the Wombles.

  • Wandsworth Prison is the largest prison in London, and after Liverpool prison is the second largest in the country
  • Wandsworth is a very old settlement, dating back to 1086, and was named after the river Wandle
  • Wandsworth has one of the country's lowest rate of council tax
  • Richmond Park, the second largest park in London, is in Wandsworth Borough
