Nicky Roeber is the Online Horticultural Expert at Wyevale Garden Centres. Here, he shares his top tips for making your garden feel much bigger than it is.

If you live in an urban area, your back garden might be smaller than you would like. But there are plenty of things you can do to liven up a small garden and make it seem much bigger than it is.

Here I've laid out my top tips for getting the most out of your garden, and helping it to appear more spacious. Read on to leanr more.

Get rid of unnecessary clutter

The tidier your garden is, the bigger it's going to look. So, it's important that you get rid of any unnecessary clutter and tidy away anything that you want to keep.

If possible, larger items like your wheelie bins should be hidden away in your garage or shed. Having them on display is bound to make your outdoor space look cramped. And, if smaller items like kids' toys tend to be scattered across your patio, invest in some new storage that will help you stay organised.

While shopping for garden storage might not sound particularly exciting, you can use it as an opportunity to add extra charm and style to your garden. If you would like some inspiration, take a look at Garden Lovers Club's list of 10 charming outdoor storage ideas

Create reflections with strategically placed mirrors

By placing mirrors in the right places, you can help your garden to look much bigger than it is. Well-placed mirrors will reflect light, as well as the view of your garden, which can create the illusion of there being more space. If you  can get a large mirror to blend into your garden - for example by obscuring its edging with plants - visitors can be tricked into thinking that your outdoor space extends far beyond its boundaries.

If you like the idea of using mirrors in your garden but aren't sure where to start, Garden Buildings Direct has a guide that will talk you through the best places to put them

Try Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardening is a huge trend this year, and it's ideal if you would like to add greenery to your garden without sacrificing any space. Living walls can also help to blur the boundaries of your garden, which will help it to appear much bigger than it is.

It's quite easy to put together a low-maintenance vertical garden that looks great. You can use a climbing plant like ivy or, if you would like to be more creative, you can fill small containers with shrubs or flowers and hang them from your fence. Succulents such as agave and echeveria are perfect for this, because they grow relatively slowly and are easy to look after.

You should also keep in mind that small gardens tend to get less light. So, varieties like Alchemilla, ferns and carmelias are likely to work for you, as they don't require much sun to thrive. If you are interested in creating a living wall, Apartment Therapy has a great photo gallery of vertical gardens that will give you plenty of inspiration.

If you follow these three tips, your garden is bound to look much more spacious. And, as a bonus, it's bound to be much brighter, tidier, and greener too!
